It's really strange, I've got to say. I just got an Asus Zenbook and am running JAWS 17 with Windows 10, and Eloquence sounds like he's talking around a piece of gauze. When I press the ESC key, for example, I hear "scape"; when I'm typing capital letters, it's very hard to hear the difference between P and T, Q and U; and I also notice some slight cut-offs at the start of each line whenever I'm reading a document or webpage with just my arrow keys. My boyfriend and I played around with he soundcards, but no matter whether I use the Windows default one or the one that came with my speakers, Eloquence behaves the same way. We have also checked that all drivers are up-to-date.
I'd say maybe I just have shitty speakers, but I don't think that's it. Whenever I run NVDA, eSpeak doesn't make those sounds. He's super clear, but of course NVDA doesn't work as well with Windows 10, and eSpeak distracting when I'm trying to read/write/edit for comprehension and sentence flow. The SAPI synthesizers sound great but don't seem to keep up very well with JAWS; not to mention their inflection is off. I really just want to use Eloquence if possible. Has anyone else had this problem, and how did you deal with it? Sorry this post is all over the place!
Thanks,
Mel
Mel, its not your speakers, I have a Inspiron7548 I get the same results. Ever sense the first service pack of windows10 its been this way.
Could it be a memory problem? No scratch that, it couldn't be that. hmmm.
I changed synths to vocalizer expressive voices the muffled sounding went away. NOt sure what is going on here, na not a memory problem. 12 GB, I7 2.4 are my specs.
You could try disabling any sound enhancements in your sound settings.
Correct. This problem is caused by the sound card.
Dell has a specific program on there you can customize, but on all you can use the basic sound settings controls.
Typesounds in the search box and you can open the card.
nice, thanks for the tip forereel, it helped. I know about the card sound settings via del's app. Its usable but only if a user knows how to use jaws' OCR screen feature.
I have the same problem, and don't know a thing, about trying to reset a sound card.
I've never had to use it, but it is there on Dell systems.
We can get buy with just the regular stuff.
With that app, you can fine tune things though.
Ed G was first in saying the cause of the problem, not I.
I just seconded his post, and gave a bit more direction.
Ouch, I had no idea this was an issue. I think I'm glad I haven't upgraded to Windows 10 yet, because I have a Dell and use JAWS, so I'd probably have this issue, and it would drive me nuts. I know that does absolutely nothing to help solve your problem, Mel, and I apologize for that, but thanks for alerting me to said problem before I encountered it.
It isn't a Windows 10 issue.
It is a sound card issue.
New Laptop computers are mainly setup for gaming, so the audio will have effects and such on it.
They are also set to make Windows sounds interesting.
Jaws doesn't require all that, so will not sound good until you adjust the settings.
It is really easy.
The reason some have trouble and blame it on Windows 10 is due to the cards settings being put back to default after updating or installing Windows 10.
If they are default, well, you are back to square one.
But, it is not a Windows 10 issue. It is caused by the sound cards default settings.
Wow, that's good to know. I myself have not experienced that with my Dell windows 19 PC. I DO however really dislike the sound enhancement features as they create some odd effects, such as normalizing audio. So you could be reading something with JAWS at a quiet volume, then all of a sudden it will get really loud, then quiet again. Also doesn't help that it usually increases the bass more than necessary. Good sound design doesn't need that.
my laptop is a mid rage gaming laptop, so I can see what forereel
is talking about.
Thanks, Mel, for resolving my anxiety. I know I'm losing hearing, but now, I know that Elequince is part of the problem. I have to turn it loud, to understand it. I don't care what the reason is, I hate it. Laughing with relief!
Blessings,
Sarah
Well, for you that can't get your settings adjusted, until you get help, just get an inexpensive USB sound card. They run about $15 to $20.
Plug it in and windows and just will go to it without you having to do anything.
Now you'll have an easy card to adjust, and your Jaws will sound correct.
You can even set Jaws to work only on that card, and everything else on the main machines card.
Since I am hearing impaired too, and headphones normally do not sound good with hearing aids on, I use a headphone amp. Not sure if I am destroying my hearing more if I am not wearing the aids while playing music through the amp or not. It is a desktop amp, but there are portable ones available. I believe Audio Quest makes some. Mine is the Asgardversion. I have no problem with a desktop amp, since most people wouldn't want to hear my loud music, lol.
So I am going to upgrade to windows 10 on a desktop pc. Is jaws doing this muffled deal only with lap top computers?
Seems so, but that will depend on how new your desktop is.
If it is working fine now, it will continue to.
Good to know. It is working fine now and the vendor is going to add memory to the computer so there are no issues.
If you are using a vendor ask that your sound card settings be set as they are now if they happen to change after the update and grade.
The vendor will notice if you ask.
I don't see a problem, but that will give you peace of mind.
Sorry for the long absence, guys. Starfly, I did exactly what you did and switched to Vocalizer, once I learned I was able to use it free of charge with the software. I'm happy to have Tom on my PC since I have him on my iPhone, but admittedly that can get confusing haha. I also can't remember if I mentioned this in my original post--at first I couldn't get NVDA to behave, but I uninstalled and reinstalled it, and it actually runs quite nicely now. There are some things it does better than JAWS, so I often switch between the two. Finally feeling like I don't want to throw this damn thing out the window. Thanks for all of your feedback, guys. :D
